FWSA* October 2017 Meeting hosted by "Bow Chasers" of Clearwater

Florida Women's Sailing Association (FWSA) meeting was held on Oct. 24, 2017 at the Clearwater Yacht Club. Fourteen Bitter Ends members attended (17 signed up but three couldn't make it). It was a very early start to our day but a good drive up carpooling from Venice. Arriving early we got to shop in the Ship's Store and enjoy the refreshments provided by the Bow Chasers of Clearwater.

This year our own Bitter Ends Ann Carroll is FWSA President. She lead an enthusiastic meeting starting with Clubs Reports telling us more about their clubs and how they get new members.
Our Delegate Miriam Staveley gave our report. Captain Pam and Janet Molen helped hold up some of our newspaper articles from recent days that Captain Pam has mounted. "Luffing Lassie" Fran Mericle gave a report on what the past Young Woman Sailors of the Year have been doing.
Bitter Ends Gloria Casey and Judy Karr run the FWSA Ships Store which they stocked well with nautical, practical, and Holiday items.
The speaker was Sailor Brad Kendall, who in a tragic accident lost his legs in 2003. His "Never say Never" attitude and support from family and friends has helped him to rebuild his life and body. Today with prosthetics he walks again. A great accomplishment for him has been along with two teammates he won a Silver Metal at the 2016 Paraplegic Olympics in Rio in a three person sailboat. He is also involved with an annual program to bring Amputee children with their families from around the country to Clearwater for a Pirate week of sailing, touring, meeting "Winter", the dolphin with a prosthetic tail, and a pirate party.
The meal was chicken or filet mignon with caramel pecan ice cream for desert.
Clubs also received the designated copies of the FWSA Annual Directory and extras are on sale for $4.00 each.
